Casagrande Fleet Master: from a custom IoT solution to a configurable DPS to deliver more effective digital services

Founded in 1963, Casagrande is one of the world's leading manufacturers of drilling machines, with more than 20,000 units distributed globally.

The challenge: moving beyond the limits of an in-house IoT solution to enable more effective remote monitoring and preventive maintenance services

Casagrande machines are the result of solid engineering expertise, designed to deliver high performance, reliability, and efficiency. To monitor and maintain these qualities in the field, the company had developed Casagrande Fleet Master (CFM) — a custom IoT solution providing real-time visibility into the operational status of the installed fleet. As data volumes grew exponentially, however, the solution began to show its limits: it was no longer adequate in terms of scalability and, above all, it did not allow the company to move toward more advanced services.

As Giuliano Peressini, Director of Technical Assistance and Engineering at Casagrande, explains: "We needed to increase the scalability of our management platform. While effective, the internally developed solution was no longer adequate to support the growth in data volumes we had seen in recent years. We also wanted to expand our remote monitoring and intervention capabilities."

This need was identified by Vodafone, a Servitly Reseller Partner, which proposed adopting Vodafone Smart Connected Product (VSCP) — the solution that combines Servitly with Vodafone's global IoT connectivity through GDSP.

The solution: a configurable Digital Product-Service (DPS) system

In developing its IoT solution, Casagrande had essentially built — without realizing it — a custom Digital Product-Service (DPS) system, which had allowed the company to take its first steps in Digital Servitization. To overcome the limitations that had emerged and accelerate this journey, Casagrande chose Servitly: a configurable DPS that provides a solid, secure, and scalable infrastructure, applies best practices in digital services, and at the same time gives the company full control and flexibility to customize its own solution.

The result was an evolution of Casagrande Fleet Master into a more scalable, flexible, and easily extensible system.

Key features of CFM

CFM transforms raw sensor data in real time into more than 60 operational and technical KPIs — including location, working hours, productivity, fuel consumption, temperature, electrical power, and more — distributing them to all stakeholders through views tailored to each user profile.

Organization View

The Casagrande team has access to all information and KPIs across the entire distributed fleet, with an always up-to-date picture of the location, customer, and usage patterns of each machine.

Service View

The service team has access to KPIs and technical performance data for each machine, supporting maintenance planning. Automatic notifications enable a proactive approach, allowing the team to schedule interventions before failures or anomalies occur — protecting customers' operational continuity.

Customer View

All customers have access to the platform's core features: visibility into their fleet in terms of location, performance, and anomalies. Customers on the premium offering also gain access to the Casagrande Data Recording (CDR) module, dedicated to operational site reporting. Through CDR, site managers can access structured reports for each work session — useful for recording completed piling operations, planning future ones, and maintaining reliable documentation for activity reporting.

How Casagrande built CFM and CDR: the role of Servitly's No-Code Console

CFM and CDR were built using Servitly's No-Code Console, which allowed Casagrande to configure ready-to-use templates and components — without writing a single line of code — while retaining full control over feature development.

Through the Console, Casagrande can define:

  • the algorithms needed by Servitly's processing engine to turn raw data into KPIs and actions;
  • differentiated user interfaces for each profile: views, widgets, templates, and information tailored to best support each user's activities.

The KPIs and information displayed for each machine are configured through product models. In CFM, a catalog of machine series sharing common characteristics has been defined, organized in a tree structure that enables configuration reuse across the entire fleet — while still allowing flexibility to customize individual definitions, such as model-specific events.

"The ready-to-use components allowed us to speed up the configuration of different services and build the foundation of our system. At the same time, Servitly provides great configuration flexibility — through custom KPIs, proprietary algorithms, and fully customizable interfaces, all through a No-Code approach. This lets us focus exclusively on developing the distinctive aspects of CFM and CDR." — declares Giuliano Peressini.

Benefits for Casagrande customers: less downtime, more efficiency, more safety

By accessing KPIs and CDR, Casagrande customers always have a clear picture of how their machines are performing. CDR in particular supports operational decisions on site with real, objective data, while simplifying the production of documentation for activity reporting.

The service team's proactive approach — enabled by automatic anomaly notifications — helps optimize maintenance planning and minimize machine downtime.

"In the environments where Casagrande machines are used, any interruption in activity is a serious issue: it slows down execution times and generates significant costs. Preventive maintenance opportunities make it possible to avoid these problems. Preventing even a single instance of downtime is real value for Casagrande and its customers — and ensures a fast return on investment." — explains Andrea Dobrigna, Sales Director.

The ability to anticipate abnormal behavior goes beyond operational continuity: it also prevents situations that could compromise the safety of workers on site.

Benefits for Casagrande: agility, scalability, and new revenue

The availability of ready-to-use components, templates, and business logic in Servitly's Console has reduced time-to-market and allowed Casagrande to evolve its offering in an agile way, without waiting for long and costly development cycles.

Casagrande was able to replicate all the features already present in the first version of CFM and CDR, moving past the scalability limitations of the previous solution and developing the new services it had set out to offer.

The result is a stronger business model, with a more compelling and distinctive value proposition that supports a closer, more continuous relationship with customers.

CDR contributes particularly to this goal: the transparency it provides on operational data builds brand trust and strengthens the relationship over time. A trust that also translates into economic value — the premium service package built around CDR represents a new source of recurring revenue for Casagrande.

Through CFM, Casagrande also supports service processes with an end-to-end approach, with a positive impact on diagnostics and monitoring costs.

An ongoing Digital Servitization journey

With this project, Casagrande has embarked on a Digital Servitization journey that can move forward quickly — going beyond the logic of simple product sales to build an increasingly comprehensive digital service offering that creates new business opportunities.

Giuliano Peressini concludes: "Adding digital services is becoming increasingly important, especially with the arrival of new generations. This opens up interesting scenarios for us — from building new commercial offerings to keeping pace with regulations that are increasingly oriented toward digitalization. Our customers are also very enthusiastic about the idea of an integrated, technologically advanced system."
