The EU Data Act User Manifesto
12 September 2025: the dawn of a new era!
From today, in fact, the Data Act applies, the new European regulation that establishes rules on access to data generated by connected products and their use.
The ambition of the Data Act is huge. Just read the press release in which the European Commission announced the new law proposal in February 2022 (available here).
According to the EC's objectives, this regulation will:
- play a key role in digital transformation and in achieving the digital objectives for 2030
- create a strong, innovative and sovereign European digital economy
- generate €270 billion in additional GDP by 2028
- together with the DGA, enable the EU to take a leading position in the global data economy
The law is based on the premise that there is a massive potential in the data generated by connected products in the EU, but that this potential is currently not being exploited.
At Servitly, we have been fighting against this ‘great waste’ of data since our foundation. In particular, we have focused on the application software needed to transform data into value-added services.
Data-based services (or 'connected services') are indeed the best way to generate value from data, because they combine the potential of data with the experience and skills of those who know how to use that data to translate it into concrete benefits: performing more effective maintenance, increasing the productivity or efficiency of a machine, extending its useful life, reducing waste and scraps, retrieving the asset to reintroduce it into a circular economy, etc.
That's why we've been enthusiastic about the Data Act from day one (read our first blog post on this topic here).
But how will all this happen?
How is the Data Act ‘triggered’?
The levers to unlock all this are in the hands of users, both in the industrial context (users of connected machines and equipment) and in the consumer context (users of smart home devices or connected cars).
For this reason, together with Mario Rapaccini, Maria Spadafora, Giulio Salvadori and Mattia Cerutti, we have published the ‘EU Data Act Manifesto for users of connected products’.
This publication aims to inform and raise awareness among users of connected products about their new rights under the Data Act.
The manifesto explains the fundamental concepts of the new regulation and highlights the 4 main rights that all users can exercise starting today, 12 September.
Are you a user of a connected product?
Understanding and asserting your rights is the first step of this great initiative.
Are you ready to act?
